I grew up in Oceanside, NY, about 15 minutes from the ocean. Taking a walk on the beach, or diving through a wave was always a source of salvation and a lesson or message that said greater forces were in play. East Hampton is on the tip of Long Island and the beach is wider and the ocean rougher. Someone once said to me that if you look at the ocean a lot, you'll have bigger ideas. I think that applies to many vistas in nature, but the ocean will always be special to me.

In the last few months of my mom's life, I remember visiting one night, distinctly. There were so many birds singing in this one tree outside her window, and it sounded surreal, like Jean Pieree Rampal's flutes serenading her. Months later, my sister Doris called me and read a few lines from my mother's journal, which described the nightly "symphony" with so much joy. She wrote, "It's so beautiful...so beautiful! One day, I'm going to paint that sound." So, I thought I'd do that in her honor. This painting means a lot to me, and I want to share it with you.
