Night Dweller
Carved and burned detail accent this deep oxblood colored mask with is 21" high x 21" wide. Red stitching surrounds the eyes and the headdress is Chincilla Coque dyed red, Golden Pheasant and horsehair.
 
Katsina
Native American Katsina's take many forms during celebrations. This depiction features mirror images front and back with natural stones and beads on both sides. Pyrographic is used to burn each line outlining the Katsina and his detail and leather dyes provide the contrasting color. The inside is finished in black and sealed with liquid plastic. A gourd ring will accompany the Katsina.

Forest Moss
Intricate burnt design surrounds this robust vessel topped with a feather design and stained with translucent dyes. The bottom of the vessel is highlighted with gold gilt for a slight shimmer. The vessel measures 7" wide by 11" high and 21-1/2" around. This gourd comes with a black gourd base to sit firmly.
 
Mountain Storms
This large vessel measures 10" wide x 7" tall and 32" around is finished on the inside in black and liquid plastic. The design combines extensive burned details including tiny points of burn within the large square design as well as the design outlines. The oxblood dye on the top and bottom accent ring sets off the translucent coloring in the center of the gourd. A flat sitting gourd it is perfect to hold natural grasses or reeds as a centerpiece or along side the fireplace, where I display a similar vessel I created.
 
Leaping Lizards
This lizard depiction is burned into a snake gourd front and back and color is added using leather dyes and ink and mounted on a black stand. The entire piece is sealed inside and out. The piece stands 15-1/2" high by 12" wide.
 
The Mesa
Featuring extensive woodburning and colored with inks, this small gourd measured 8" high and 5" wide and is 14-1/2" around. The inside is completely finished in black and sealed.
 
Rain
A small gourd measuring 5" high by 6" wide is 17-1/2" around features symbols of rain around the top rim falling down the sides or a scattered woodburned design.
 
Ancient Symbols
This is a large gourd measuring 10" high, 12" wide and 39" around. Shown here with 20" tall decorative reeds to better illustrate the gourds size. Each symbol is first burned into the surface of the gourd and then color is added using acrylics. A gloss finish is used on this vessel. The inside of the vessel is completely finished in black and sealed.
 
Sun on the Mountain
The geometric design of this gourd is burned into the gourd and color is added using leather dye. The finish is semi-gloss. The woven top are pine needles dyed a warm yellow. The gourd measures 7" high, 6" wide and 21" around and has a slightly uneven bottom so it comes with a ring for stability.
 
Aquene (Peace)
Small oxblood-colored mask measuring 10" high x 7" wide. Carved detail diagnoally across the mask creates a contrast of textures bordered by acrylic raised turquoise dots which also outline the sides and bottom of the eyes. Mallard and hackle feathers create the head dress. The back of the gourd is finished in black and sealed.
 
Montega (New Arrow)
Small, masculine mask features carved detail below one eye and along the side. Mahogony in color, acrylic accents are added at the headband and along one side of the face. The mask is adorned with Pheasant Tippet and Pheasant strands and Parrot feathers. The mask measures 15" takk abd 14" wide in total area.
 
Evu (Full of Grace)
Carving and woodburning into the gourds surface creates added interest to this peaceful mask which measures 12" high and 12" wide in total area. Oxblood dye is accented with purple ink and turquoise and white acrylics. A rough turqoise piece is centered in the middle of the carved arrow forms. The headdress is made up of Rook Crow, Macaw, Ginea, Hackle feathers and African Porcupine Quills.
 
Aponi (Butterfly)
The colors of a butterfly are achieved with leather dyes and inks, accented with raised acrylic beads of black and white. Woven eyes and woodburned center create surface texture to the otherwise smooth gourd surface. The headdress is created with Magpie, Blue and Yellow Macaw, Pigeon and Hackle Feathers. Total are of this mask is 15" high and 12" tall.
 
Harvest Maiden
The curved gourd forms the maidens body with a Buffalo gourd added for the head is adorned with the curved designed inspired by Mata Ortiz. The design is first burned into the gourds surface and then colored with dyes and inks. A gourd piece is then added onto the base to simulate a pot and a beaded necklace with fetish is added where the two gourds are joined. The entire piece is then mounted onto a black wooden base with a felt underside. Perfect for a table, mantle or nicho the piece measures 15" tall and 12" wide and 5" deep.
 
Autumn Oak
This is a large vessle measuring 10" tall and 28-1/2" around with an asymetrical top and features a new technique. The oak leaves and branches surrounding the top are first burnt into the surface of the gourd and shades of orange, ochur, yellow and artprint brown are blended for each leaf. A small dental burr is then used to carve away the background - a very time consuming process using small strokes and avoiding cutting through to the interior of the gourd. The background is then given several applications of black acrylic to fill all the indentations. The inside of the vessel is painted black and sealed with polycrylic. This vessel sits flat.
 
Blazing Oak
The second in a series, this vessel measures 8" tall anad 15-1/2" around and is topped with pine needles that were dried black while they were still green. The technique involved first burning the leaf design into the surface of the gourds. Dyes are mixed and dragged to blend the fall colors onto the leaves. A small dental burr is then used to carefully carve away the background, exercising care not to carve through to the inside of the gourd. Several applications of black acrylie are then added to the background to fill in all the carved areas. The inside of the vessel is painted in black acrylic and sealed with polycrylic. The vessel sits flat without a stand.
 
Spring Oak
This vessel is made from the top of a very large gourd cut to be asymetrical at the top rim. It is 8" tall and 15-1/2" around at the widest part. This is the third in a series of Oak motiffs and depicts the tree in the spring. The leaves are burnt into the surface of the gourd and dyes are then blended using various shades of green and yellow to achieve the color variation in each leaf. A small dental burr is then used to carve away the background surrounding the leaf, exercising care not to carve through the gourd. Black acrylic is then applied in several steps to fill all indentations carved into the surface. The inside of the vessel is black and sealed with polycrylic. This vessel sits without a stand.
 
Anaba (Returns from War)
This is a smaller mask measuring in total with feathers at 9" tall and 11" wide. Word burned detail shows through the red gourd dye in the angles below the eyes and above the eyes along the headband. White acrylic paint is used to add raised dots and a dot-hash design along with mouth, headbank and red acrylic surrounds the angled eyes. Pheasant, turkey, Tippet and Ginnea feathers form the head dress. The back of the mask if completely finished in black paint and sealed.
 
Sitala (Of Good Memory)
A small mask measuring 10-1/2" tall x 13" wide in total wall space required. Colors of the forest are achieved using gourd dyes and wood stain and acrylic is added in the raised dots and dot-hash pattern around the face. The rectangular eyes and mouth are woven in light greet and the head dress consists of parrot and hackle feathers. The back of the gourd is black and is sealed.
 
Kuruk (Bear)
This is a mini mask requiring only a small amount of wall space. The children at a recent art fair loved him. Total space required is 9-1'2" high x 9" wide. Wood stain, gourd dyes and acrylics are combined for this whimsical character with a head dress of blue jay, pigeon, duck and hackle feathers. The back is black and is sealed.
 
Akando (Ambush)
This warrior mask measured 8-1/2" high and 6" wide and is adorned with Ginnea, Pigeon and Hackle feathers. The surface of the gourd features wood burned detail through the center of the face. The eyes are woven in black and acrylic painted cheeks mimics the wonderful natural spotting in the Ginnea feathers. The back is black and sealed
 
Mardi Gras
Ready to party, this small gourd in red, green and purple gourd dyes features a multi-color window pane design which was burned into the surface of the gourd before color was added. Woven eyes and acrylic dot and hash pattern add contract. The funky and fun head dress is multi-colored hackle feathers in red, purble and black. She is small - measuring 10" high and 9" wide in total area. The back is black and sealed.
 
The Elder
This gourd was cut right down the center to create the raised forehead topped with parrot and hackle feathers with long strands of white horsehair flowing well below the bottom of the gourd. Gourd dyes and acrylic paints were used to achieve the colors of the southwest and woodburned hatching accents the one side of the face and burned teardrops fall from the one eye. This gourd requires a wall space of 20" in height x 6-1/2" in width. The back of the gourd is finished in black and sealed.
 
Helaku (Sunny Day)
Small and colorful, this small gourd brings smiles to all who look upon her. Measuring only 9" x 9" in total area, the head dress consists of Pheasant, Macay and Hackle feathers. Wood burned detail adorns ths asymetrical face with one eye to watch over the room. Gourd dyes and acrylics allow the surface of the gourd to show through for added dimension. The back is completely finished in black and sealed.
